Library Information

Wanganui Girls' College Library
Welcome to the Annette Hall Library

This information will help you get the most out of your school library.

The library will be your best way to find useful information, learn new things and find a good book for your relaxation times.

These notes will help, but if you need more information, ask the librarians.

The library has:
Novels to read - a good selection of new and classic titles.
Browser Books and Magazines to look at in the library.
A Reference area with books, encyclopaedias, newspapers, CD ROMs.
Access to the Internet including INNZ, EPIC, Te Puna.
The Information Files.
Non-Fiction books for in-depth information, and interest.

Opening Hours
The library is available to you during these hours:
Interval: every day 9.45-10.05
Lunchtime:  Mon, Tue, Wed and Fri - 12.00 - 12.50 Thur 12.10 - 1.00
Class times: as a class with your teacher or with a signed permission slip from your teacher.

Library Rules
Like any other part of life, there are some simple rules to help make the library a successful part of everyone's Girls' College experience.

  • Leave your bags and cell phones in the foyer. There is a security camera operating to protect your belongings.
  • No eating or drinking in the library, including the foyer. No drink bottles in the library either.
  • You can borrow 3 books at a time, for a period of 2 weeks. They can be renewed.
  • Books are issued to you, don't lend them to your friends.
  • Your feet are to stay off the furniture.
  • Shoes are to be clean or in the foyer.
  • The computers are not for playing games on.

Borrowing Books
When you enrol at school, you will be given a student ID number, it is this number you will use when you borrow books. So memorise it, or keep it with you.
The librarian will issue your books and date stamp them.
You can use your ID card too.

Finding Out What the Library Has
If you are looking for something in particular, you can use the OPAC (Online Public Access Catalogue).
Log on to the computer using Student as both your name and password.
Select Programs, then Library Searches and enter. This opens OPAC.
From the OPAC menu you can select the best way to search for the book or information you want. Subject, Title, Author and Keyword are probably the most popular ways.

Reference, Reserves and Renewals

1. If you find REF in the description of the book, this refers to the books in the library that are for reference. These books can only be used in the library. They include the encyclopaedia sets, dictionaries and books of specialised information. They have a red dot.

2. If the book you want is out, you can reserve it. Log on to OPAC, show the book you want and click on the pencil. Put your borrower number in the box. When the book is returned the librarian will be alerted and notify you. Books will be kept for a week after notification.

3. If your books are overdue and you still want to read them, ask the librarian to renew them.

Other Things the Library has to Offer

Newspapers -  Wanganui Chronicle and the Dominion Post come every day. They are available for resource gathering the following week.

Magazines are available, from the free Tearaway and Jet, to the more serious information publications of the Navy, Army and Air Force. The magazines are to read only and can't be borrowed.

The Vertical File contains information about a variety of subjects, mostly to do with New Zealand and Wanganui, and is of a historic nature.

Careers information from the tertiary institutions of New Zealand is continuously being up dated.

National Library borrowing for the things that the library hasn't got is available, ask a librarian.

If you can't find it - ask. The Librarians are there to help, and they know how to locate almost everything.
