Product Design

Programmes in this challenging area of Technology aim to develop creative problem solvers capable of producing imaginative and functional products.

Product design in Years 9 and 10

Junior programmes are of one term’s duration. Students are introduced to the use of a range of hard materials, specialist skills and equipment in our state of the art design workshop. Theme based projects using modern materials encourage creativity and innovation.

Product design in Years 11, 12 and 13

NCEA courses at senior levels are offered to students interested in product and industrial design. Projects are driven by realistic design briefs that are developed by the students themselves. This enables students to produce work in their own area of interest.

The types of skills gained within a product design project include:

  • Researching the design problem
  • Utilising specialist tools and techniques to aid creativity
  • Acquiring a range of manufacturing and modelling skills
  • The development of evaluation and product analysis skills
  • Gaining an appreciation of the role of design within society
  • Using computers to aid design
